I will try to update more than once a day when I can now.
Things are not good today. I am currently sitting in her room, listening to our CD and the respirator, under a window curtain of 1000 paper cranes.
They are taking out the central line - it's not worth the risk of further infection to keep it in.
She is no longer responding to any requests or commands, though for just 5 minutes she tried to look at me. That's the only response since last night.
This morning her fever spiked to 107. They took drastic measures to lower her temperature, including using a cold blanket. It is still high, 102 or thereabouts. They don't have any evidence of infection yet, and there is a theory that the center of the brain (the medulla) that regulates body temperature may be part of the damage. They have no good answers and no real prognosis. She's still breathing on her own, but more than half of her respiration is very shallow. The respiratory alarms go off about every two to three minutes. On the up side, they no longer make me jump constantly. On the down side, it means that the respiratory syndrome I described in my last post is a serious ongoing problem.
In good news, the digestive and eliminatory systems are still working. There was some elevated kidney levels, but still within safe/normal ranges. A carotid ultrasound this morning still looked good. There is still no evidence of further stroke damage or cranial bleeding, which is good. For now, all we can do is play a wait and see game to find out how extensive the midbrain and medulla damage will be in the long run, and see if she can stay on top of all the complications long enough to recover from the stroke.
They're going to be putting her on albumin to help with the extra fluids. On the bright side, we JUST checked and her temp is now down to 100, which I consider miraculous, so ....
Keep praying, keep lighting candles, keep folding cranes, keep on doing all the things that all of you are doing, keep writing me notes and letters. Everyone has gone home now, so it's just me and Tali and lots of beeping and whooshing machines. More later after I talk to the doctors again today. If you haven't come to see her and would like to, drop me a note so I can keep schedules arranged.
Thanks. - Mood:pensive
